Waiilatpu Alpine and Toggenburg Dairy Goats

Welcome to Waiilatpu Alpine and Toggenburg Dairy Goats

Waiilatpu...Y-E-La-Poo..."Land of the Rye Grass"

We are located in southeastern Washington State. The "dry side" of the state, in the beautiful Walla Walla Valley. Kathy has had goats some 40 years of her life, and since 1974 at the present location. We have a 5 acre farm that is one mile east of the Whitman Mission, National Historic Site. The Native American name for this site is Waiilatpu, pronounced (Y-E-La-Poo). It is because we are linked by our past and present, that we chose this beautiful name for our dairy goat herd. The Whitman Mission was one of the stopping points on the famous "Oregon Trail" of the mid 1800's. One can still see the ruts of the wheels from covered wagon's at the Whitman Mission today.

Kathy's paternal great grandparents homesteaded in Benton County near Prosser Washington, near the turn of the century. Kathy's aunt says, "they had a few goats on their homestead as well as many horses, and other animals for their farming". Kathy's paternal grandmother was born in Portland, Oregon in 1892.

Her maternal grandparents who grew up in Nebraska also had dairy goats on their farm. Her mother remembers raising one of her goat kids, selling it and buying a "Bible" with the money she received from the goat sale. The family moved to Hillsboro, Oregon in 1939. They had a 90 acre farm, north of Hillsboro. Kathy's parents were married in Hillsboro in 1946. Soon they had a 10 acre farm in Laurelwood, Oregon. At this farm, Kathy lived until the 5th grade. Her chores in the morning consisted of milking the goats. Goats were a very important source of milk for the family, as Kathy's younger sister was allergic to cow milk. Kathy has many fond memories of this place! From Laurelwood, Kathy's family moved to a 90 acre farm 25 miles SE of Salem, Oregon. (Falls City) The goats were a important part of their lives.

Waiilatpu takes pride in every kid that leaves the farm. We feel we have been blessed to be able to care for these wonderful creatures! We praise the Lord for this. Our goal is to breed a dairy goat that has excellent temperament, milk production, and type!

We promote our dairy goats by being on official milk testing through a state lab and certified tester, through showing and Linear Appraisal.

We have had the JOY of being named the 1995 National Show Premier Alpine Breeder and Exhibitor. We have had the thrill of three National Spotlight sale consignments, and two Colorama Sale doe's.

We linear appraised in 1998. Linear Appraisal is the scoring of ones herd by an approved and certified appraiser, from the American Dairy Goat Association. The appraiser who does this comes to your farm and evaluates your bucks, does and junior stock by a set standard. They give your doe's a score based on 90+, being "Excellent or near ideal", and 85+ being "very good" and etc. We received 7 Excellent over-all scores on our does and we also received 15 mammary scores of Excellent. For this we are thankful!

Waiilatpu uses Delta Dash to fly your kid anywhere in the lower 48 states. The current price is $162.56 for 50 lbs total. A health certificate is $50. We ask that you send us an Airline approved kennel for shipping your kid. You may use one of our air kennels. We ask that you pay a deposit on our kennel and as soon as the crate is returned in good condition your money is promptly refunded. Every precaution is taken to assure that you receive your kid in good health. Our goal is to provide you, the buyer, with a kid that given good management, can be a genetic asset to your herd. We can send a photo of your kid before it leaves the farm for your approval. You can plan to have your kid flown to you at around 6-8 weeks of age. We will be in touch with you on a frequent basis after your choice of kid is born to keep you informed of his/her progress.
